Mica Letter to GAO Requesting Investigation of TSA Personnel Misconduct

January 3, 2012

On January 3, 2012, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) requested that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) conduct an investigation of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel misconduct and TSA's hiring, background check and disciplinary processes.

Recent media reports, in part, have highlighted concerns about TSA employees engaging in questionable conduct, including allegations of drug smuggling, aiding drug traffickers in circumventing security, possession of child pornography, and unlawfully carrying a handgun into an airport's secure area.

Chairman Mica wrote of his concerns that these examples of misconduct are evidence of weaknesses in TSA's background check procedures.
